Classic Christmas Colours: What Do They Mean?

17.09.2019

Everybody instinctively recognises the colours of Christmas. At a glance, you know that when colours like red, green and gold come together, you’re probably looking at something festive.

But why is it that the three colours in particular have become so closely associated with Christmas? What’s the meaning of the three most iconic Christmas colours we’ve come to accept as part of the festive season?

Let’s take a closer look at the true meaning of these three classic Christmas colours:

Red

As a Christian celebration, the colour red symbolises the blood of Jesus Christ. Not only this, but red is also universally acknowledged as the colour of love. Christmas has always been a time that brings families and loved ones in general closer together, sharing memorable experiences and strengthening their bonds.

Red is also interpreted as a joyful and lively colour, which likewise stands for everything the festive season is all about.

Green

The colour green has a close association with Christmas as it is the colour of the holly plants. Holly having the remarkable strength to maintain its beautiful colour throughout even the harshest weather, represents eternal life in Christian symbolism.

Of course, green is also closely associated with the classic Christmas tree - another symbolic representation of eternal life. When green is combined with red, its connotations with Christmas or even stronger.

Gold

Last but not least, the colour gold is representative of the gift of gold offered by one of the three Kings, who visited Jesus Christ after his birth. In addition, gold is the colour of all-things luxurious, exclusive and prestigious – a colour that suggests celebration and the enjoyment of special moments.

Once again, it’s only when gold is combined with both red and green that its true significance as an iconic Christmas colour becomes apparent!

Why not have Santa educate your children about this topic with a personalised typed letter sent to them from Santa? Wouldn't that be fantastic!
